The Battle

The Objective : Brunswick’s force is attempting to withdraw beyond the river Berkel. The baggage should be placed twelve inches from the crossing at Stadtlohn and can move one inch per turn towards the river. The Catholic forces are deployed but are strung out with Anholt’s force arriving first followed by Lindelo and then Tilly, and must attempt to catch as much of Brunswick’s force before it withdraws.

The Outcome : Anholt’s forces were fired on immediately they emerged from the woods but Knyphausen’s forced quickly withdrew across the first stream rather than risk envelopment, abandoning their guns in the process. Brunswick’s main body became rather demoralised at the sight of these withdrawing troops and began to withdraw. Eventually all of the Catholic forces engage with the enemy. Brunswick’s army was destroyed, many were killed and many surrendered – hemmed in by the marsh.
