The Battle of Nordlingen

 September 6, 1634

The Battle

The Objective: The Swedish army is attempting to relieve the siege of Nordlingen. Due to poor scouting the Swedish commanders believe that only a single hill dominates the landscape and are expecting to attack this one hill. All of the Catholic artillery and half of the infantry units can be in fortifications. The Catholic player deploys first but only units that are at the front of the Allbuch, the rest are marked on the players map. The Schonfeld heights are not put on until all of the Swedish army has been deployed, and the gully (counts as Hedge for terrain crossing), will only be placed when Swedish units are six inches away.

The Outcome: Uncoordinated Swedish cavalry attacks are quickly thrown back. Scottish infantry gain some outer fortifications but are counter-attacked by Spanish infantry which throws them back. Horn ordered more units to attack the Allbuch, and despite repeated assaults made little progress. The Swedish cavalry made confused and fruitless attacks that were repelled by the Imperial foot soldiers. An organised retreat deteriorated into a rout resulting in the capture of Horn and many thousands of Protestant soldiers.

Horn's infantry is formed up and about to attack Imperial forces on the Allbuch, his cavalry has wheeled around to occupy the Lachberg.

Leganes forces on the Schonfeld heights are in their field-works awaiting the Swedish attack. German dragoons are already scouting the flanks of the Imperial defences. Other Swedish cavalry can be seen in the background beginning to sweep round for an attack.

Leganes forces on the Allbuch and behind the gully are awaiting the Swedish Infantry attack on their positions.

The Swedish cavalry begin their attack on the Schonfeld, Swedish infantry in the background are moving up to support the attack.

RETURN TO BATTLES

Gallas's cavalry approaches the Swedish battle-line, skirmish cavalry engage the infantry, determined to hinder their attack on the Schonfeld.
