Scale : Grand.
Allied Deployment : The Allied army secured crossings over the river Dyle but the main body was not immediately committed against the French. Control of the Allied army rested on the dozen or more Allied generals that made up the Council of War. Marlborough advocated an immediate attack against the French, the other generals were undecided. Marlborough’s command will arrive in turn five.
French Deployment : The French army needs to prevent the Allied army crossing in strength. The French side takes the first turn.
Special Rules : The Allied player rolls one six sided die at the end of their turn, a score of six indicates that the Allies will attempt to cross the Dyle in force and attack the French army. When Marlborough’s force arrives on the table, a score of five or six is needed. Marlborough will not attack unless the Council give the go ahead. The river can only be crossed at the towns (in march column) or by deploying the bridging equipment outside of the marshy areas. The bridging equipment will extend one inch per turn when the controlling general is in contact with the river except in a turn when the bridge has suffered a shooting hit. It costs one command point per turn to extend the bridge by one inch. The river is three inches wide, it will therefore take at least three turns to span the river. Enemy units contacting the bridge unopposed will result in the immediate destruction of the bridge. If the bridging command suffers enough hits to reduce its strength to half, it will only progress at half an inch per turn.
Outcome : The Council of war failed to approve the attack and the Allied troops withdrew across the river.
